Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Building Information Modelling (BIM) embeds key product and asset data into a 3 dimensional computer model that can be used for effective management of design and information throughout a project lifecycle – from earliest concept through to operation.
The Government Construction Strategy (GCS) requires that government projects will need to utilise fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016. This refers to all centrally procured Government projects as outlined in the GCS including new build.
COBie is an additional data standard that was developed by the US Corps of Engineering to manage the data coming from BIM models into the client organisation, particularly for the handover of O&M information.
Construction items can be imported into a BIM programme to give both a visual and data representation of the item being specified - these are commonly called BIM Objects and libraries of said objects are available through various sources such as the National BIM Library.
Keim Mineral Paints are committed to the future of BIM and providing assistance in the embedded data. Generally, at this time, we do not feel that specific BIM Objects for Keim Mineral Paints coatings are necessary, as there is no physical representation to the imported object and therefore feel that the most relevant placement at this time is through the creation of 'Materials'. BIM Materials can be created (depending on the specific programme) through a Materials Browser or BIM Link and require certain standard information to be inputted which can then be attributed to existing objects within design i.e. apply a paint 'Material' to an existing render 'Object'.
In order to expedite this process for specifiers we have created a standard set of information for each of our products systems which can be copied into BIM in the preferred format. In addition to this, all of the colours in the standard Keim pallettes have been allocated their appropriate RGB references so that visual renderings can be created.
As with all digital colour swatches, we would advise caution and strongly suggest that colours are selected from physical swatches/samples in order to determine the exact shading and colour preference, before a colour is committed too.
TRIAL BIM OBJECTS (Updated 15.10.15)-
As a trial with the National BIM library we have two products, namely Keim Optil and Keim Soldalit which can be downloaded as full BIM objects, and therefore is required can be accessed here.
We hope that all of the above information is useful, if the specific information you require is not available or you have any comments about this page then please do not hesitate to contact us info(at)keimpaints.co.uk.
